Why Christmas Carols?
Carols are, without doubt, associated with happiness and childhood memories of Christmas. As we grow older we are allowed to relive that happiness in our own children's fascination at Christmas time through the communal singing of carols. This simple strategy has produced music whose origins are lost in the mists of time. It is this long history, coupled with joy, that attracted us and we have tried to encompass and treat the music sympathetically but at the same time offer something new to the modern listener. Who knows, perhaps you will be intrigued enough to find recordings of the traditional settings of the original carols which will lead to a revival of these lesser known, beautiful and exciting tunes.
If you've read
The History of the Carol you will know that the majority of the carols sung each Christmas are Victorian due to a resurgence in interest in the carol at that time and the publication of the first modern collection of traditional carols. The carols that we have adopted here are much older and owe a great deal to those two great musicians & poets' trad. and anon. The world would be a poorer place without them.
